Dr. Maurice Wakwabubi, the acting head of Kenya Blood Transfusion and Transplant Services (KBTTS), and Dr. Everlyne Chege, the Ministry’s technical lead, have been suspended with immediate effect, the Ministry announced on Wednesday.
The move, according to the Ministry, aims to prevent any possible conflict of interest as inquiries continue.
Dr. Chege had chaired a multi-agency probe in December 2023. Her suspension, alongside Dr. Wakwabubi’s, is intended to preserve the impartiality and transparency of the process.
“This action is necessary to ensure investigations are carried out independently and in line with the law,” the Ministry’s statement read.
The specific nature of the investigation or allegations has not been disclosed.
In the meantime, Dr. Martin Sirengo, Senior Deputy Director of Medical Services, has been appointed to lead KBTTS on an interim basis. The Ministry has not specified the duration of his temporary role.
These developments come amid growing scrutiny over the country’s blood transfusion and transplant systems, with mounting calls for transparency and accountability.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to due process and emphasized that the measures taken are part of broader efforts to uphold integrity within the health sector.
More information will be shared as the investigation progresses.
