In response to a widely-circulated video depicting an alleged assault on a healthcare provider at Port Victoria Sub County Hospital in Busia County, Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha issued a statement on Thursday denouncing acts of violence against healthcare workers. She emphasized that individuals engaging in such behavior will face legal consequences.
Nakhumicha characterized the assault on the healthcare worker in Busia not only as an attack on an individual but as an assault on the entire healthcare system and its guiding principles. She commended the healthcare worker for maintaining composure during the incident and urged healthcare seekers to interact with healthcare workers respectfully.
The CS affirmed that violence against healthcare workers will not be tolerated, and those responsible will be apprehended and subjected to the full force of the law. Nakhumicha expressed the government’s unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and security of healthcare professionals nationwide. She called for mutually respectful engagements between the public and healthcare providers, emphasizing the need to build and maintain a robust health system.
In the video, a man and a woman can be seen and heard harassing nurses at the facility, verbally abusing them and creating a disturbance in the hospital. The woman scatters objects on a nurse’s desk, tosses items at her, and threatens to involve someone named “Ababu.” The incident reportedly occurred when the two individuals demanded immediate attention for a person they had brought to the facility, leading to a confrontation with hospital staff and invoking the name of a senior government official.
The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) Secretary General Dr. Davji Atellah has also condemned the incident and called on relevant authorities to take swift action against the perpetrators.
