Garissa Family Seeks Justice for Relative Missing for Over a Year

A family in Garissa is calling for justice and answers regarding the disappearance of their relative, Abdinasir Khalif, who has been missing since June 30, 2023.

The family claims that Abdinasir was abducted by suspected National Police Reservists in Hagadera, Fafi Sub County. Despite more than a year of searching, they say they have received no help or answers from security agencies.

On Friday, the family, led by Abdinasir’s sister, Amina Khalif, held a peaceful protest in Garissa town, demanding his release and accountability from the authorities.

Amina shared that her brother disappeared after attending a wedding in Hagadera, where he was with two friends.

“When we first heard of his disappearance, we immediately went to Welmerer Police Station, but they denied having him in custody,” she explained.

The family expressed growing concern over the lack of information, criticizing the silence from institutions tasked with protecting citizens.

“We are deeply worried about his continued disappearance and the silence from the authorities,” Amina said.

Abdinasir’s brother, Yussuf Khalif, also voiced his frustration, noting that repeated efforts to seek answers from the police and other agencies have been futile.

“Our pleas have gone unanswered, leaving us in pain and uncertainty. No one should disappear without a trace,” he said.

The family also raised concerns about Abdinasir’s vehicle, which they claim is being used by security officers in Hagadera, while his phone remains off.

They have called on oversight bodies like the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) to investigate the matter urgently.

ODM nominated MP Umulkheir Harun joined the family in condemning enforced disappearances, urging the government to take decisive action.

“Every Kenyan has the right to due process and protection from arbitrary detention,” she stated. “Such actions undermine public trust in institutions meant to safeguard our communities.”

Attempts to reach Garissa County Police Commander Amos Ambassa for comment were unsuccessful, as he declined to respond.
