The family of the late world marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum has disclosed that his burial will take place next Saturday, February 24, 2024, at their ancestral home in Kaptagat.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the family announced the commencement of burial preparations, including the formation of a funeral committee tasked with overseeing the arrangements and keeping the public informed.
Kiptum tragically lost his life on Sunday night in a fatal road accident near Kaptagat on the Elgeyo Marakwet-Ravine road, alongside his Rwandan coach, Garvais Hakizimana.
A post-mortem examination was conducted on Hakizimana’s body at the Eldoret hospital, supervised by Dr. Benson Macharia. The process, witnessed by the coach’s family and Kelvin’s widow, Assenete Kiptum, lasted an hour. However, they opted not to disclose the findings.
A fundraising event has been slated for this Saturday, February 17, at Kiptum’s residence in Chepsamoo village, Keiyo South, Elgeyo Marakwet County.
In the midst of mourning, demands for an investigation into the accident have amplified, with DAP-Kenya leader and former Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa urging for a thorough inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
