Eight Dead, Several Injured After Matatu Plunges into Mbagathi River

In a tragic incident on Saturday morning, at least eight people were killed when a matatu plunged into the Mbagathi River.

The accident, involving a 33-seater matatu, occurred at 10 a.m.

According to a police report, the matatu lost control before it plunged into the river, resulting in the immediate death of eight individuals.

The police report stated, “This morning, 18/05/24 around 10:00 a.m., a PSV matatu on the Gataka-Nairobi route lost control and plunged into Mbagathi River just before Cooperative University, killing eight people on the spot.”

Several other passengers sustained injuries and were quickly transported to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention. “The rest were rescued by various ambulances and taken to nearby hospitals, though many are in critical condition,” the report added.

Authorities have issued a warning about heavy traffic in the area and advised motorists to seek alternative routes.

This incident occurs as the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) intensifies its road safety awareness campaigns across the country.
