EACC Recovers Six Government Land Parcels Valued at Ksh.85M Illegally Seized in Kakamega

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has successfully retrieved six valuable government properties unlawfully taken over at Milimani Estate in Kakamega County, collectively assessed at Ksh.85 million.

According to EACC Spokesperson Eric Ngumbi, corrupt land officials colluded with private individuals to seize these six land parcels.

Addressing the media, Ngumbi revealed that among the recovered properties was the official residence of the Kakamega East Deputy County Commissioner, whose title deed was unlawfully registered under a private individual, leaving the government official without a home.

The court has invalidated the titles for these properties and mandated the Kakamega Land Registrar to issue new title deeds in the government’s name, which will then be transferred to the State Department of Housing by EACC.

Ngumbi also expressed concerns about the escalating cases of land grabbing in Kakamega County. He mentioned that the commission is actively pursuing 20 other parcels of land in the prominent Milimani area.

The commission has initiated legal proceedings to recover eight land parcels, while investigations are ongoing for the remaining 12 parcels to facilitate their retrieval.

Additionally, EACC is conducting criminal investigations against land officials implicated in the fraudulent allocation of government lands.

EACC urged individuals holding titles to unlawfully acquired government property to voluntarily surrender them. It emphasized its authority under the law to engage in negotiations with corruption suspects through the ‘Alternative Dispute Resolution’ process.
