Defence Secretary Aden Duale and Environment Minister Soipan Tuya led a tree planting initiative alongside Kenya Defence Forces personnel at Embakasi Garrison.
Over 30,000 trees were planted within specific areas of the garrison, with similar efforts undertaken across all KDF installations nationwide.
Troops from various units participated, not only planting trees but also engaging in educational sessions emphasizing the significance of environmental conservation.
This activity is part of the broader National Landscape and Ecosystem Restoration Program, aligning with President William Ruto’s ambitious goal of planting 15 billion trees by 2032.
To contribute to this objective, the Ministry of Defence has designated every fourth Wednesday of the month for tree planting activities.
The Ministry emphasized that this initiative underscores its dedication not only to national security but also to environmental preservation and sustainable development.
The presence of Minister Tuya at Embakasi Garrison highlighted the crucial link between environmental well-being and national security.
Both ministers emphasized the KDF’s multifaceted role in national development initiatives, extending beyond their conventional duties.
They also addressed the imperative to address the threats posed by climate change to national and regional security.
Recently, each ministry was assigned specific counties for monthly tree planting exercises.
In a strategy report received by Duale, it was stated that KDF aims to plant at least 2.8 million trees in Nakuru and Isiolo counties.
Last year, President Ruto inaugurated National Tree Growing Day on November 13, 2023, signaling Kenya’s commitment to planting 15 billion trees by 2032 and restoring 10.6 million hectares of forest.
