Donkeys Stolen, Slaughtered for Meat in Mwea

On Wednesday morning, residents of Thiba North Village in Mwea West Sub-County, Kirinyaga County, were shocked to find the carcasses of four stolen donkeys that had been slaughtered, seemingly for the purpose of selling the meat to unsuspecting locals.

The bodies were discovered near Thiba Catholic Church after the locals tracked a suspicious vehicle to the church grounds, where they found unknown individuals in the act of slaughtering the missing donkeys.

The suspects reportedly fled before they could be apprehended by the community.

Bernard Maina, a local resident, explained, “When the villagers raised an alarm, the group of young men ran off, leaving behind the slaughtered meat. My donkey was one of the four.”

The residents then informed local authorities, who arrived at the scene to investigate.

Mary Wambui Muthee, a county official overseeing the protection of animals in Kirinyaga, lamented that many young people in the area had been left unemployed due to the rising incidents of donkey theft.

“Many youths in Mwea, who relied on donkeys for transporting rice and fetching water, have lost their livelihoods due to the increase in donkey theft,” she stated.

“This isn’t the first time. Just yesterday, two donkeys were stolen and slaughtered, and the thieves escaped with the meat in a Probox vehicle in Ngurubani town,” another resident added.

The donkey carcasses were later set ablaze by veterinary officers.
