Death Toll Rises to 10 After Eldoret–Webuye Highway Crash

The number of people killed in a road accident that occurred on Tuesday night at Mukhonje in Lugari has increased to ten, following the death of two more victims in hospital, authorities have said.

The latest fatalities were boda boda riders who are reported to have collided while ferrying bags of fertilizer from the original crash scene.

The accident happened along the busy Eldoret–Webuye highway and involved a matatu and a fertilizer-laden truck. Witnesses said the matatu, which was heading from Eldoret, slammed into the rear of a stationary truck as the driver attempted to overtake other vehicles.

Maturu Sub-location Assistant Chief Samuel Wamalwa confirmed the incident and said the matatu driver died on the spot.

Survivors described the ordeal as terrifying, recalling a loud crash when the vehicle hit the trailer, forcing passengers to escape through the windows.

Local residents alleged that the truck had been parked by the roadside for more than two days before the crash.

One resident, John Sakwa, said the accident occurred at around 7:30pm and that eight people were initially confirmed dead at the scene.
