DCI Officer Apprehended in Nyeri for Alleged Bribery

In a significant development, officers from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) made an arrest on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, apprehending a Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officer in Nyeri.

The officer, identified as Luke Nyasangah and stationed at Ngano Police Station in Nyandaraua County, stands accused of soliciting a Ksh10,000 bribe from a local resident who had fallen victim to fraudsters, losing Ksh115,000 through Mpesa transactions.

According to a statement issued by EACC’s Central Regional Office in Nyeri, the resident had sought assistance from the DCI officer to recover the stolen funds. However, Nyasangah allegedly demanded a bribe, claiming it was essential to expedite the process of tracking down the fraudsters.

This arrest forms part of EACC’s ongoing efforts to combat corruption and recover stolen assets across various regions of the country. For instance, on April 1, the High Court issued an order requiring Isiolo County officials to refund Ksh7,220,000 obtained through procurement fraud following a case filed by EACC.

In another instance, EACC’s investigations revealed irregularities within the County Government of Taita Taveta, where County Assembly leadership and Members of County Assembly (MCAs) were implicated in misappropriating public funds. The report highlighted instances of overpayment to certain MCAs and fraudulent claims for allowances related to a trip to Zanzibar, resulting in losses exceeding Ksh7 million.

These actions underscore EACC’s commitment to upholding integrity and accountability within public institutions, as it continues to pursue legal measures to recover misappropriated public funds and hold perpetrators accountable for their actions.
