Moses Kuria, the Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Performance, and Delivery Management, arrived in Kisumu on Saturday to participate in the memorial service for Mzee Jaramogi Oginga Odinga. Kuria’s entrance occurred a little after 2:30 pm while the event was already in progress.
Greeted warmly by the crowd, Kuria extended greetings to the leaders in attendance, including Azimio leader Raila Odinga. Despite being a staunch supporter and close ally of President William Ruto, Kuria, known for his critical stance on Raila, participated in the memorial service.
Jaramogi, Kenya’s founding Vice President, passed away 30 years ago on January 20, 1994, in Kisumu. The memorial took place at St Stephen’s Cathedral Church in the lakeside city, organized by Raila to celebrate and honor his father’s legacy in Kenya’s history.
Raila invited distinguished scholars, pan-Africanists, thought leaders, and journalists to speak at the event. Jaramogi, born in October 1911, played a vital role as a political figure and leader of Kenya’s freedom fighters, contributing significantly to the country’s independence.
In September 2023, Kuria revealed his longstanding ties with the Odinga family, acknowledging that Raila’s father, Oginga Odinga, had saved him from expulsion from the University of Nairobi. Reflecting on their shared history, Kuria emphasized the importance of Jaramogi’s influence on his life and career during the launch of Siaya County Aggregation and Industrial Park (CAIP) in Siaya.
