ChatGPT is increasingly becoming part of everyday conversation, with “Just ask ChatGPT” now replacing phrases like “Google it” in many settings.
Across offices, classrooms, and homes, more people are turning to the AI tool as their first stop for quick answers, explanations, and even help with complex tasks. What started as a novelty has gradually turned into a daily habit, shaping how people work, learn, and access information.

From writing emails and summarising documents to brainstorming ideas and answering personal questions, ChatGPT has evolved into a constant digital assistant for many users.
Grace, a regular user, says the tool has become central to her daily routine. She now relies on it both at work for efficiency and at home for conversations and personal guidance, highlighting a shift many users are experiencing.
This growing reliance reflects a wider trend where AI is valued not just for productivity, but also for convenience and accessibility. Tasks that once required hours of research can now be completed in minutes, often with clearer and simpler explanations.
For Eric, the impact has been especially noticeable in academics and professional work. He says ChatGPT has transformed how he handles large volumes of information, helping him understand complex material quickly, summarise assignments, and prepare for exams.
In business, the tool is also reshaping operations. Jane, a Nairobi-based entrepreneur, explains that ChatGPT helps her manage multiple tasks, from drafting marketing content to responding to customers and generating promotional ideas, allowing her to focus more on growing her business.
Rather than consulting multiple sources, users can now rely on a single platform to simplify ideas, generate insights, and provide tailored responses. As adoption grows, ChatGPT is following the same path as past digital innovations, shifting from a new technology to an essential daily tool.
A new global report supports this trend, showing that generative AI has moved firmly into mainstream use. The Digital 2026 Mid-Year Global Update Report by DataReportal estimates that about 2.42 billion people—nearly 29.2% of the world’s population—now use generative AI tools.
Within this space, ChatGPT remains the dominant platform, with around 1.15 billion monthly users. The report also notes that about 63% of users rely exclusively on ChatGPT among large language model platforms.
Usage of generative AI has surged by 141% over the past year, with approximately 1.4 billion new users joining. This rapid growth mirrors earlier digital shifts seen with smartphones and social media, where early curiosity quickly turned into everyday reliance.

Although ChatGPT leads the space, the AI ecosystem is expanding, with around 662 million users opting for alternative platforms such as Google Gemini and Claude.
Even so, ChatGPT’s widespread use across writing, research, coding, and customer service highlights how generative AI is becoming a core part of modern digital infrastructure rather than just an experimental tool.
The report also points out that over 1.5 billion people have yet to adopt standalone generative AI tools, indicating significant room for further growth.
Overall, the findings show that AI—especially ChatGPT—is no longer a passing trend but an integral part of daily digital life, transforming how people access and use knowledge worldwide.
