CS Kuria denies Rumors of a Rift Between President Ruto and DP Gachagua

Moses Kuria, the Public Service Cabinet Secretary, has rejected suggestions of tension between President William Ruto and his deputy, Rigathi Gachaagua.

During an appearance on Citizen TV’s ‘The Explainer’ show on Tuesday evening, Kuria dismissed speculation about a potential fallout between the country’s top two leaders, insisting that they maintain a harmonious relationship.

Kuria highlighted the distinct roles held by the DP within the government, such as chairing Cabinet Committees and overseeing State honors, contrasting it with Ruto’s position during Uhuru Kenyatta’s tenure.

He emphasized that if there were genuine discord, Gachagua would have been stripped of his responsibilities by Ruto.

“In my view, I have not seen concrete evidence of any discord between the president and his deputy. Unlike William Ruto, who had a single defined role as principal assistant during his time as deputy president, the current deputy is privileged; he chairs Cabinet Committees,” Kuria argued.

“Gachagua has shown remarkable leadership in managing these committees. One area where we’re excelling is our Cabinet processes.”

Kuria further stated, “The deputy president oversees engagement with development partners… he’s been tasked with responsibilities related to coffee and tea, spearheading our efforts against alcoholism, and managing State honors. He enjoys considerable privileges compared to his predecessors.”

However, Kuria asserted that if there were indeed any disagreements, it would be incumbent upon the DP to take the initiative in resolving them amicably.

“If there were any issues, the responsibility to resolve them lies with the deputy president, who should acknowledge the privileges he holds and strive to bridge any gaps with his superior,” he remarked.

Kuria’s remarks come amidst public disagreements between Ruto and Gachagua, particularly regarding the latter’s efforts to unify the Mt. Kenya region.

While the President and his allies advocate for national unity, they seem to criticize Gachagua’s faction for promoting tribalism.
