Chad’s Opposition leader Succès Masra handed 20 years in prison

A fierce critic of President Mahamat Idriss Déby, Masra briefly served as prime minister in Déby’s transitional government for about five months before challenging him in the May 2024 election.

Prosecutors opened a case against him in May following deadly clashes in the southern town of Mandakao, which left dozens dead.

Alongside the prison term, Masra was ordered to pay a fine of 1 billion CFA francs (\$1.8 million), according to his lawyer, Kadjilembaye Francis, who confirmed plans to appeal the ruling.
