The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has licensed an additional 27 Digital Credit Providers (DCPs), raising the number of approved lenders to 153.
The announcement, made on Thursday, comes just three months after CBK cleared 41 DCPs in June 2025.

According to the regulator, more than 700 applications have been submitted since March 2022, with applicants undergoing scrutiny on business models, consumer protection, and the integrity of proposed shareholders and directors.
“As of June 2025, licensed DCPs had issued 5.5 million loans worth Ksh.76.8 billion. Other applicants remain in the pipeline, mainly pending submission of required documentation,” CBK said.
The regulator stressed that the licensing process is aimed at ensuring compliance with the law while protecting consumers, especially given past concerns about predatory lending, unethical debt collection, and misuse of personal data by unregulated players.
CBK noted that most DCPs operate through digital platforms and USSD services, offering a range of credit products including school fees loans, personal loans, asset financing, and business support.
The full list of newly licensed firms has been published on the CBK website, while other applications remain under review.
