Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi has raised alarm over his safety, claiming that unidentified armed individuals in plain clothes attempted to access his hotel room in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Mwangi, who is in the country to support detained Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu, said the men, believed to be Tanzanian security agents, refused to identify themselves.

“My life is in danger. I’m staying at the Serena Hotel in Dar es Salaam, and there are armed men in civilian clothing outside my door,” he stated.

In a follow-up post, Mwangi reported that the men had withdrawn from his room but remained in the hotel lobby, apparently monitoring his movements.

He added that he is prepared to cooperate with the authorities once Tanzanian legal representatives involved in his case arrive.

“The unidentified men have moved to the lobby. My bags are packed, and I’m ready to go with them once the Tanzanian lawyers arrive. Until then, I’m staying in place. Thank you for your support,” Mwangi wrote on social media platform X.

This development comes amid a broader crackdown, with former Kenyan Chief Justice Willy Mutunga, along with activists Hanifa Adan and Hussein Khalid, detained at Julius Nyerere International Airport. Authorities indicated they would be deported.

The trio had also traveled to Tanzania to express solidarity with Lissu.

A day earlier, on Sunday, PLP party leader Martha Karua, Law Society of Kenya Council member Gloria Kimani, and Pan-African Progressive Leaders Solidarity Network member Lynn Ngugi were also detained at the same airport before being deported to Kenya — prompting public outcry.

Tundu Lissu, a former Tanzanian presidential candidate, is currently facing treason charges filed in April 2025.

Human rights organizations and opposition figures have increasingly accused President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration of targeting political dissenters, citing a disturbing rise in forced disappearances and extrajudicial killings.
