White handkerchiefs fluttered above the crowd, many wiping away tears from faces marked by anguish. Some stood clapping in respect, while others fell to their knees, overwhelmed by emotion as the solemn procession made its way around the stadium.

“Baba, why are you leaving us?” one mourner shouted, sparking a wave of wails and lamentations that rippled through the stands — a haunting chorus of national sorrow.

Whistles and vuvuzelas sounded intermittently, blending mourning with celebration for a man remembered as a symbol of courage and resilience.

The flag-covered casket was carried in a slow ceremonial circuit around the stadium as thousands watched in silence, some waving miniature flags, others singing freedom songs that captured Raila’s decades-long political journey.

Leading the procession were clergy and officials, moving in step with the solemn hymns performed by church choirs. The congregation rose to their feet, heads bowed in reverence as the service began.

The chants, songs, and cries merged into one emotional wave — a nation united in mourning its fallen son, a leader who had fought tirelessly for justice and democracy.

The State Funeral featured interfaith prayers, military honours, and musical tributes celebrating Raila’s enduring legacy. Performances by choirs and cultural groups reflected both grief and gratitude, offering a poignant symbol of national unity.

Security was tight across the capital, with officers from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), National Police Service (NPS), and National Youth Service (NYS) stationed at key points. Entry into the stadium was strictly controlled, with attendees passing through several screening checkpoints.
