Raila’s Bodyguard Maurice Ogeta Breaks Down in Tears at Parliament

A moving scene unfolded at Parliament Buildings on Friday morning as Maurice Ogeta, the longtime bodyguard of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, broke down in tears while viewing his employer’s body.

Dressed in a dark blue suit and wearing sunglasses, Ogeta appeared visibly distraught as he entered the chamber. Supported by Narok Senator Ledama Olekina, he walked slowly toward the casket, his steps unsteady and his lips trembling.

In a rare moment that cut across political lines, Ogeta embraced President William Ruto, drawing solemn nods from those present. Once seated, he was seen wiping tears, overcome by grief as Olekina remained beside him, offering quiet comfort.

The emotional moment reflected the deep personal connection behind years of public service. Ogeta, who had stood faithfully by Raila through decades of political struggle, arrests, and triumphs, embodied the profound sense of loss shared by many who worked closely with the ODM leader.

Behind his dark glasses, Ogeta carried the visible weight of sorrow. He was among the few who accompanied Raila during his final days in India, bearing witness to the last moments of a man he had protected for much of his career.

Ogeta’s loyalty had been tested before. In 2023, during a period of heightened political tension, he was abducted by unidentified men believed to be police officers. He disappeared for several days and was later found blindfolded and shaken — a stark reminder of the dangers that come with guarding one of Kenya’s most polarising political figures.

Despite the ordeal, Ogeta resumed his duties, remaining by Raila’s side at rallies, meetings, and negotiations until the very end.

With more than two decades in elite security service, Ogeta is known to have undergone extensive military and intelligence training abroad — including two years each in Afghanistan and France, advanced courses with Israel’s Special Forces for 15 years, and an additional decade of specialized protection training with Russian units.

Raila Odinga passed away on October 15, 2025, in India, where he had been receiving treatment. He will be laid to rest on October 19 at his ancestral home in Bondo, Siaya County.
