The Selection Panel responsible for recruiting nominees for these positions stated that this number includes applications submitted both in person and via email to the secretariat.

Nelson Makanda, the panel’s chairperson, confirmed that the verification process has begun and that a long list containing the names of all applicants will be released, as mandated by paragraph 3(1) of the First Schedule of the IEBC Act.

“The panel assures the public that all members are committed to ensuring a fair and transparent process,” he stated in a press release.

The application deadline for the IEBC chairperson and member positions was February 15, 2025, at 5 p.m.

Makanda also emphasized that the panel will keep the public updated at every stage of the recruitment process.

On February 11, 2025, Makanda announced that a new electoral commission will be established by April 25.

Following the shortlisting and interviews, the panel will present a list of qualified candidates to President William Ruto for nomination.

President Ruto will then nominate one individual for chairperson and six for membership.

Within seven days, these names will be submitted to the National Assembly for approval before formal appointments are made.

On January 27, the panel was assigned the task of selecting the next group of seven IEBC commissioners within 85 days.

The nine-member panel includes Dr. Fatuma Saman, Prof. Adams Oloo, James Misati, Nicodemus Bore, Koki Muli, Andrew Tanui, and Caroline Kituku.

The Selection Panel members were appointed by President William Ruto and took their oaths of office before Chief Justice Martha Koome, in compliance with the Third Schedule of the IEBC Act.

The absence of commissioners has hindered the IEBC’s ability to review constituency boundaries as required by law or conduct by-elections.
