Orengo: Azimio Must Assert Its Position as Majority in Parliament

Siaya Governor James Orengo has called on Azimio-affiliated Members of Parliament to assert their rightful position as the majority in the National Assembly following a favorable court ruling.

The ruling, issued on February 7, 2025, overturned a previous declaration by National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, which had recognized President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza coalition as the majority.

Orengo urged Azimio MPs, particularly those from the ODM party, to act decisively and reclaim their rightful place in parliament. “I want to remind my party, ODM, that this court ruling must not be disregarded. Azimio has been declared the majority—this opportunity should not be missed. Rather than simply sitting with the powerful, take what rightfully belongs to you,” Orengo stated.

While attending the funeral of Richard Ochieng’ Oloo, the father of lawyer Willis Otieno, Orengo welcomed the ruling, claiming it casts further doubt on the legitimacy of the 2022 presidential election results. “This court decision confirms the 2022 election results were inaccurate. How could Raila’s party and coalition secure the majority of parliamentary seats yet lose the presidency? This ruling highlights these inconsistencies,” he argued.

The veteran ODM leader also cautioned Azimio leaders against negotiating with Kenya Kwanza, urging them to firmly assert their majority status.

In related news, Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka has called for a Parliamentary Group (PG) meeting for Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya on Wednesday next week. “I spoke to Raila Odinga and Uhuru Kenyatta. We want to hold an Azimio PG meeting to strategize. Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya is the majority party,” Musyoka said, adding that the meeting would follow discussions on Tuesday.

Musyoka also remarked that the court ruling should serve as a lesson for former Azimio leaders who defected to Kenya Kwanza, suggesting they reflect on their actions. “Those who praised Ruto, I know you’re feeling uneasy. You could have waited. For those who joined Ruto, I suggest some self-reflection,” he noted.
