Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka speaks during the National Dialogue Committee at Bomas of Kenya on November 6, 2023.

Kalonzo: Raila Must Retire from Politics If He Loses AUC Chairmanship

Kalonzo Musyoka, leader of the Wiper Party, has stated that if former Prime Minister Raila Odinga loses his bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship, he should consider retiring from active politics.

Speaking on the Social Newsroom Show with journalist Mark Masai, Kalonzo expressed his best wishes for Raila in the AUC race, acknowledging Raila’s leadership potential in the role. He believes that if Raila wins the position, it would be beneficial not only for Kenya but for the entire African continent, given his extensive skills.

However, Kalonzo emphasized that if Raila were to lose, he should step away from politics. “I don’t see how Raila would lose and then come back to lead Azimio. I would be surprised. That wouldn’t be the Raila I know. He needs to be realistic. If he wins, it’s great for him, the country, and Africa. If he loses, I think it’s time for him to retire,” Kalonzo remarked. He suggested that Raila join former President Uhuru Kenyatta in the role of a retired statesman.

President William Ruto has supported Raila’s candidacy for the top AU position, where Raila will compete with Mahmoud Ali Youssouf from Djibouti and Richard Randriamandrato from Madagascar. The three candidates participated in a televised debate on December 13, 2024, where they outlined their visions for Africa’s transformation through the implementation of the AU Mandate and Agenda 2063.

The AU Commission chairperson elections are scheduled for February 15 and 16, 2025, and will be preceded by elections for six commissioners on February 12-13. The elections will be conducted in three rounds, as confirmed by the AU.
