The government has moved swiftly to allay public health concerns following the fall of a mysterious space object in Makuku Village, Makueni County, on Monday, December 30, 2024.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni reassured residents and the wider public that the debris, which fell in the region, posed no immediate health risks.
“We have conducted thorough assessments on the ground, and I can confirm that the metallic debris does not pose an immediate danger to the public’s health,” Muthoni stated. She urged caution, advising residents to avoid approaching the area or handling materials found nearby.
“While preliminary assessments suggest no immediate threat to public health, the Ministry of Health advises the public to avoid the area where the object was found and refrain from handling any unknown materials,” Muthoni added. She further encouraged the community to report any unusual environmental changes or health concerns to local health authorities.
The object, identified as part of a ‘separation from a rocket,’ measures approximately 2.5 meters in diameter and weighs around 500 kilograms. Despite initial fears, no injuries or casualties were reported after the object landed with a loud bang, which was heard several kilometers away, causing widespread panic among local residents.
Muthoni confirmed that investigations are still underway to determine the precise origin of the metallic object. The Ministry of Health is collaborating with other agencies, including the Kenya Space Agency (KSA), the Kenya Nuclear Regulatory Authority (KNRA), and the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF), to investigate the occurrence.
KSA, which recovered the object the following day, issued a statement addressing the situation, saying, “This is an isolated case, and the Agency will investigate and address the matter using the established framework under International Space Law.” They also expressed gratitude to the local community, praising them for promptly reporting the incident and assisting authorities in maintaining public safety.
The government and its agencies have emphasized their commitment to ensuring the well-being of Makueni County residents and addressing any lingering concerns about the object. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have assured the public that any further health risks will be addressed immediately.
As investigations continue, residents of Makuku Village are urged to remain vigilant and report any further developments to the appropriate authorities.
