Russia Plans Nuclear Drills Amid Western ‘Threats

Via: BBC

Russia has begun preparations for missile exercises near Ukraine simulating the use of strategic nuclear weapons to counter “threats” by Western officials.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said recent statements by French President Emmanuel Macron and British Foreign Secretary David Cameron were “a brand new round of rising tensions”.

Last week, Mr Macron refused to rule out the possibility of sending French troops, should Ukraine ask them to do so, while David Cameron said that Ukraine had the right to use British weapons for attacks inside Russia.

On Monday, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that David Cameron’s “strong, hostile sentiments” contradicted Britain’s previous assurances that long-range missiles sent to Ukraine would not be used on Russian soil and meant that Britain was “an ally of the conflict”.

The Ministry added that the response to Ukraine’s attacks using British weapons against Russia may involve targeting any British military facilities and equipment in the territory of Ukraine and elsewhere.

It also said that Mr Macron’s statement about the possible deployment of French troops to Ukraine could be considered “a readiness for direct confrontation with Russia”.

The British and French ambassadors in Moscow were summoned on Monday.
