Ruto: We Will End Extrajudicial Killings

President William Ruto has reiterated that his government is committed to ending extrajudicial killings in the country.

He emphasized that it is the responsibility of his administration to establish policies and ensure that any criminal activities are thoroughly investigated.

“Whether committed by citizens, criminals, or law enforcement officers, all criminal acts must be investigated, and we must uncover the truth behind any wrongdoing in Kenya,” he stated.

Ruto made these remarks during the funeral of National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula’s mother in Bungoma on Friday.

He further stressed that anyone who violates the law and disrupts peace must face the full legal consequences. “The law must be applied impartially because the rule of law is the foundation of our democracy,” he added.

The President assured that under his leadership, the country would not return to the days of extrajudicial killings, where bodies were found in rivers like Yala and Tana. “Such incidents will not occur under my administration,” he said.

Ruto noted that addressing extrajudicial killings was a key promise in his manifesto, and he has taken measures to fulfill it. This includes transferring the operational budget and financial independence of the police from the office of the president to the inspector general of police.

This move aims to ensure the National Police Service operates as an independent institution capable of making unbiased decisions on investigations, prosecutions, and upholding the rule of law.

The President also mentioned that the police must perform their duties within the boundaries of the law. He acknowledged the harsh criticisms on social media and called for a collective approach to ensure the nation remains balanced.

“This will ensure that Kenya’s democracy does not descend into chaos, abuse, or undermine the rule of law,” he stated.

Ruto assured that his administration will uphold the rule of law, urging all Kenyans to do the same. He concluded by saying that the government will support all institutions working towards peace and legal order.

“This is the foundation for sustaining our democracy,” the President affirmed.
