Rigathi Gachagua, the former Deputy President, has criticized the National Intelligence Service (NIS) for allegedly monitoring his movements.

In a statement released on December 19, 2024, Gachagua accused an NIS officer of trailing him from Nairobi to Makueni County during his recent visit to Kalawa Ward in Mbooni Constituency.

He shared photos of the vehicle and the individual he claims was involved in the surveillance, voicing concerns over the misuse of public resources.

Gachagua urged the NIS to deploy its personnel and resources more effectively to enhance national security. “National Intelligence Service, please assign this vehicle and officer to do meaningful work that contributes to our security as a nation,” he said. “It was a waste of fuel and time to have him follow us all the way from Nairobi to Makueni yesterday.”

This is not the first time Gachagua has criticized the NIS publicly. In October 2024, he defended his remarks against NIS Director General Noordin Haji, asserting that holding public officials accountable was necessary. He emphasized that such oversight was crucial for the effectiveness of national security agencies.

In June 2024, Gachagua also called for Haji’s resignation, accusing him of failing to provide critical intelligence that could have prevented the unrest following the proposed Finance Bill 2024. He claimed the NIS’s failures contributed to the violence and loss of life during the protests.
