A devastating fire broke out early Sunday morning in the Obunga slums in Kisumu Central, destroying 14 houses.
The blaze, which began around 4 a.m., left nothing behind, as all belongings were consumed by the flames.

Local resident Edward Onyango reported that the fire was extinguished about an hour later, after the iron-sheet houses were reduced to ashes. The Kisumu County fire brigade responded promptly, working tirelessly to control the flames.
Onyango urged both the Kisumu County Government and humanitarian organizations to provide assistance to the affected families. “It’s a heartbreaking morning for us here in Kisumu Central; these families are devastated,” he said, expressing gratitude that no casualties were reported.
The fire reportedly started in one of the homes before quickly spreading to others. The exact cause of the blaze remains unknown.
Jane Auma, another resident, described how she was awakened by the cries of her neighbors. “There was no time to save anything; we rushed to help the children and their parents escape the burning homes,” she said, appealing for help from well-wishers to support the affected families.
Locals also called on authorities to investigate the fire’s cause and to implement measures to prevent future incidents. The families have lost their clothes, food, and other essentials, which the community believes can only be replaced with the help of leaders and aid organizations.
“I feel for the children,” Auma added. “This is why we ask our leaders to come together to ease the impact of this disaster on these families.”
