A violent incident occurred in Kilera village, Igembe North, Meru County, where a man attacked and killed four neighbors before being lynched by enraged residents.
Police described the attack as unusual. In total, five people died, leaving the community in shock.
The incident, involving a mentally challenged man, occurred on Saturday afternoon about 10 kilometers from Laare Town. The victims were tending their farms when they encountered the attacker, identified as Jeremiah Kabuora, 38.
Igembe North Police Commander Mark Bitok reported that the attacker inflicted fatal machete wounds on four people. The man was killed by the mob as he attempted to target more individuals.
The attacker initially targeted five people; three died immediately, while the fourth died later in the hospital. Another victim was hospitalized in serious condition.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident and have cautioned against taking the law into one’s own hands.
Residents noted the attacker’s history of violence. One resident mentioned that the attacker’s father had avoided the area due to the man’s aggressive behavior and suspected mental illness.
On the day of the attack, the man had a confrontation with his father and was subsequently expelled from their home. Armed with a machete, he began attacking anyone he encountered.
The deceased include Geoffrey Muriuki Maore, 38, found in Luma area; Seberia Mukomaitha, 70; and Regina Micubu, 35. The identity of the fourth victim is not yet known.
According to police, the assailant was confronted by a mob while attempting to attack another person near a water point and was subsequently stoned to death.
Police discourage mob justice and advocate for suspects to be handed over to authorities for proper legal proceedings. The bodies have been moved to Maua mortuary for autopsy, and a team of detectives has been dispatched to investigate the case.
The rise in mob lynchings across the country highlights the urgent need for measures to address this trend.
