Nairobi County Senator Edwin Sifuna has criticized the Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) for suggesting that toll fees be applied to major roads that are already in use.

On Tuesday, Sifuna expressed his concern on X (formerly Twitter), questioning how KeNHA could propose tolls on roads that were funded by taxpayers.
He has pledged to push for a Senate hearing where KeNHA officials will need to explain the rationale behind this new policy.
Sifuna commented, “I don’t understand how @KeNHA Kenya justifies charging tolls on roads that were built with taxpayer money years ago.”
He also suggested that instead of imposing tolls on existing roads, KeNHA should focus on constructing new roads that could be tolled.
“Build new toll roads and charge for them, but don’t start charging us for using Thika Road! Let’s finish with Kawira and then I’ll call you to the Senate to explain yourselves,” he added.
KeNHA announced on Tuesday that Kenyans might be required to pay toll fees if the proposed Road Tolling Policy is approved.

Roads under consideration for tolling include Thika Superhighway, Nairobi Southern Bypass, Nairobi-Nakuru-Mau Summit Highway, Kenol-Sagana-Marua Road, Mombasa Southern Bypass, and the newly opened Dongo Kundu Bypass.
