Raila: Uhuru Urged Me to Engage with Ruto During Gen Z Protests

Azimio leader Raila Odinga has disclosed that former President Uhuru Kenyatta requested him to collaborate with President William Ruto to address the concerns raised by the Gen-Z protests.

Speaking in President Ruto’s Elgeyo Marakwet stronghold, Odinga explained that Kenyatta’s request led him to explore ways to progress the country.

“During the national unrest, former President Kenyatta asked me to reach out to President Ruto to find solutions to the issues raised by the Gen Z demonstrations. We talked about the situation, and I shared my views on how to address it,” Odinga said.

Odinga refuted claims that he had deserted his Azimio allies to join the broader government. He clarified that his role was limited to helping Ruto identify suitable candidates from his side for the administration.

“I am not part of the government. We did not agree on a coalition government. Ruto asked me to assist in selecting candidates from my side for his administration, which I did. I believe this will help us advance as a nation,” he added.

Odinga’s remarks come amid speculation about his involvement in President Ruto’s administration.

On July 19, President Ruto announced new cabinet nominees, including four senior ODM members: John Mbadi (National Treasury), Opiyo Wandayi (Energy and Petroleum), Hassan Joho (Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs), and Wycliffe Oparanya (Co-operatives and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Development). These appointments have caused dissatisfaction within the opposition.

On Monday, DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa criticized the opposition, accusing the ODM of betrayal and threatening democracy.

Additionally, Martha Karua’s Narc Kenya party formally withdrew from the coalition’s governing council.
