Governor Fernandes Barasa of Kakamega has confirmed that the renovations at Bukhungu Stadium are underway and on track to be completed in time for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) matches later this year.
During an inspection of the stadium, which is being upgraded in collaboration with the national government to host the continental games, Governor Barasa assured that the ongoing construction will be finished within three months, in anticipation of the September tournament.
“We are making good progress towards hosting CHAN 2024. The pitch has already been stripped, and within the next three months, the stadium will be fully prepared, including grass planting and drainage improvements,” he stated.
The ongoing refurbishment, valued at Sh1.4 billion, encompasses the installation of lighting, renovation of changing rooms, upgrading the natural turf to meet international standards, enhancement of seating areas, construction of ablution blocks, and renovation of changing facilities.
Current efforts are focused on revamping the pitch, enhancing drainage systems, and refurbishing the 10,000-seater C section.
The stadium’s initial construction, initiated in 2015, also included the establishment of offices, parking lots, VIP sections, and changing rooms.
For the Kakamega County government, hosting major sporting events like CHAN and potential future tournaments such as the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) presents significant economic opportunities. As part of its preparations, the county is gearing up for a major investment forum scheduled for the upcoming month.
