Avocado Exports: Kenya’s Valuable Economic Asset

Dubbed the “Green Gold” of Kenya, avocados are increasingly recognized as a significant contributor to the country’s economic prosperity.

Last year, they constituted a notable 17% of total horticultural exports, positioning Kenya among the top avocado-producing nations globally, competing with established producers like the United States, Mexico, and Colombia.

During a recent Avocado Stakeholders’ Forum in Nairobi, numerous small-scale farmers shared insights into how the avocado industry has provided them with new opportunities and access to diverse markets.

Facilitated by the USAid Strategic Partnership Program (USP) and the Fresh Produce Consortium of Kenya (FPC-Kenya), in collaboration with Strathmore University Business School, the forum focused on discussions surrounding quality standards and compliance requirements within the avocado industry.

While larger players have historically dominated the market, there is a growing recognition of the need to incorporate small-scale farmers who are now significant contributors to avocado production and export growth.

With an increasing number of small-scale farmers entering avocado cultivation, regions such as the North Rift, Nyanza, and Western Kenya have witnessed a surge in avocado farming, with production volumes projected to rise by nearly 20% by year-end.

The importance of training and advising small-scale farmers on best practices in avocado production cannot be overstated, aligning with USP’s mandate to empower the private sector through capacity building and training.

To ensure the sector’s sustainability, collaboration among various stakeholders is crucial in facilitating access to markets and introducing advanced technologies for improved harvesting, storage, and transportation practices.

Kenya’s avocado production has shown steady growth over the years, presenting an opportunity for economic revitalization and food security if sustained.

In addition to exportation, avocados offer significant health benefits to millions of Kenyans, with by-products such as peels and seeds finding applications in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries.

Despite the lucrative prospects, the avocado industry faces challenges, such as the suspension of certain varieties for export due to concerns over immature fruit shipments. Adhering to quality standards and inclusive policies is essential for Kenya to leverage the global avocado boom successfully.

Government and private sector initiatives play a vital role in ensuring Kenya’s avocados maintain their reputation as a sought-after commodity in international markets.

Balancing quality assurance, sustainable practices, and inclusive policies will be key to ensuring continued high production and quality avocados in both local and global markets.
