Bungoma:Police Raid gas Refilling Facility, Arrest one

In Kiminini’s Milimani region of Bungoma county, law enforcement apprehended a businessman accused of running an unauthorized gas refilling station from his private residence.

This crackdown follows the tragic explosion at a gas refilling station in Embakasi, Nairobi, resulting in six fatalities and 300 injuries.

A nationwide operation is underway to target similar illicit facilities.

During the raid, authorities discovered various empty and filled gas cylinders, along with numerous 20-liter jerricans containing gas for refilling. Additionally, 27 bags of charcoal were found being sold without the necessary permit.

The suspect is currently being questioned and detained pending further legal proceedings.

Regional police commanders have been instructed to collaborate with other government agencies to crack down on such unlawful establishments, which are often situated in residential areas, posing a general threat.

In response to the Embakasi tragedy, the government has announced stringent measures, including reassessing the risk of all LPG plants, closing non-compliant sites, demolishing illegal facilities, and implementing a comprehensive LPG growth strategy.

Amid calls for action following the explosion, several individuals, including the yard owner and officials from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), have been arrested.

Government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura has reported that seven individuals remain in critical condition at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) and Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral, and Research Hospital (KUTRRH).

KUTRRH is currently treating 19 patients, including 10 males, six females, and three minors, while KNH has admitted 67 patients, six of whom are in critical condition due to severe burns.
