Ex-Radio Africa Journalist Killed in Nairobi Crash

A former Radio Africa journalist lost her life in a road accident involving a motorcycle and a concrete mixer along Uhuru Highway in Nairobi on Friday evening.

The victim, 24-year-old Rose Mbugua, died after the motorcycle she was travelling on collided with a Foton concrete mixer near the University Way roundabout at around 5.30 p.m., police said.

According to preliminary investigations, both the motorcycle and the concrete mixer were heading from Westlands towards the city centre when the rider allegedly struck the road pavement, lost control and crashed into the left side of the truck.

The collision threw Mbugua, who was travelling as a pillion passenger, off the motorcycle. She sustained severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police officers processed the scene before moving the body to Nairobi City Mortuary, where a post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted.

Detectives have launched investigations to establish the circumstances that led to the fatal crash.

Friends and former colleagues remembered Mbugua as a dedicated, humble and hardworking journalist.

The accident comes amid growing concern over the increasing number of fatal road crashes across the country. Police say motorcycle-related accidents continue to account for the largest share of road fatalities.

On Friday night alone, 13 people died in separate road accidents across the country. The victims included five motorcycle riders, five passengers, two pedestrians and one pillion passenger, while more than 20 others sustained serious injuries.

Police said investigations into the various accidents are ongoing.
