Student Dies After Alleged Push from Moving Matatu

A tragic incident along Thika Road has sparked widespread anger after a final-year medical student reportedly died after being thrown from a moving public service vehicle and subsequently run over.

The victim, identified as Eugene Mutuku, was said to be on his way to a hospital attachment in Kasarani on Friday morning when the incident occurred.

Police from Kasarani confirmed the incident, adding that the vehicle involved has since been impounded as investigations continue.

A motorist who was driving behind the matatu said he witnessed the student being ejected from the vehicle before being hit by another car. He immediately stopped to assist but found the student had already been critically injured.

Preliminary reports suggest the incident may have followed a dispute over a small fare balance, though authorities have not officially confirmed the circumstances leading to the fall.

The incident has triggered public outrage, with leaders and citizens questioning passenger safety in the public transport sector.

Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina condemned the incident, calling it a sign of deep moral decay in society, questioning how a passenger could allegedly be thrown out of a moving vehicle over a minor fare dispute.

The case adds to a growing list of similar incidents involving passengers allegedly being pushed or falling from moving matatus, raising fresh concerns over safety standards in the industry.

In recent months, comparable cases have been reported along major highways, including Thika Road and the Nairobi–Namanga route, some of which have led to arrests and convictions of matatu crew members over passenger deaths and injuries.
