Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata has faulted moves by the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to discipline or sideline its secretary general Edwin Sifuna, describing the strategy as a political miscalculation.
Speaking in a television interview, Kang’ata said ODM should have handled internal disagreements more cautiously instead of escalating tensions by targeting Sifuna. He argued that such confrontational approaches could end up boosting the senator’s popularity rather than weakening him.

He noted that Sifuna has repeatedly gained visibility during political confrontations, saying that attempts to isolate him may further strengthen his support base, especially as political realignments intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.
Kang’ata warned that hardline tactics in internal party disputes often benefit opponents, adding that efforts to silence dissent could deepen divisions within ODM instead of promoting unity.
Sifuna, who has become a key figure in the party’s “Linda Mwananchi” faction, has been advocating for a return to ODM’s pro-people agenda, focusing on issues such as cost of living, governance accountability, and civil liberties. He has also openly opposed President William Ruto’s re-election bid in 2027.

His stance has created friction within ODM, with some leaders pushing for a more flexible political strategy while others back his strong opposition position, leading to growing scrutiny of his role as secretary general.

Kang’ata concluded by urging political leaders across parties to favour dialogue and persuasion over coercion, warning that heavy-handed tactics can backfire and reshape internal politics in unexpected ways.
