A large fire erupted at the University of Nairobi’s Taifa Hall on Wednesday night, causing significant damage to the building.
The fire is believed to have started in the kitchen of a restaurant within the hall before spreading to other areas, including parts of the administration offices.
Central Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD) Stephen Okal reported that the fire was initially contained after midnight but reignited at dawn. At around 5 a.m. on Thursday, security personnel detected the new outbreak.
“The fire brigade was called back to the scene and successfully managed to control the blaze,” Okal said.
No injuries were reported, though the property damage remains undetermined. Okal noted that the building, being historic, sustained extensive damage and authorities hope to determine the cause of the fire.
Fire experts will conduct an investigation and take appropriate action.
Videos shared on social media captured the severity of the flames, with smoke and fire visible across the campus.
In response, police were deployed on Wednesday night to prevent looting as crowds gathered to take advantage of the situation while the fire brigade worked to control the flames.
The fire occurred just before the university’s scheduled exams.
John Orindi, the university’s head of communications, stated that further updates on the incident would be issued later.
Kenyans on social media raised concerns and urged authorities to take immediate action to contain the fire.
The damage to this historic building is considered a significant loss, particularly as the university is the oldest in the country.
