Nyeri Under Siege as Murkomen Targets Illicit Brewers

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has directed the immediate deployment of a special security team to Nyeri County to tackle the rising cases of counterfeit alcohol and drug trafficking.

He said the team will operate in the county for about three weeks, with instructions to dismantle networks involved in manufacturing, distributing, and selling illicit brews and drugs.

Murkomen warned that the operation will be firm and uncompromising, insisting that the government cannot allow illegal alcohol trade to destroy lives while a few individuals profit from it. He also urged the Inspector General of Police to send officers who are fully committed to the mission.

The CS further ordered changes in policing within the area, including the deployment of new officers and a new Sub-County Police Commander in Mathira West, after allegations that some officers were colluding with illegal alcohol traders.

He vowed strict action against any police officers found accepting bribes or protecting criminal networks, stressing that such conduct undermines ongoing police reforms.

Murkomen also questioned why suspects arrested in illicit alcohol cases are often released on lenient bail terms, allowing them to return to illegal activities. He called for closer coordination between security agencies and the judiciary to ensure stricter enforcement of the law.

He expressed confidence that President William Ruto would secure a second term, adding that Kenyans should use the government’s manifesto to evaluate its performance.

Murkomen also dismissed claims that the Mount Kenya region had been sidelined, insisting it remains central to government development plans.

He further urged former President Uhuru Kenyatta to take a more unifying role in national politics, similar to former President Mwai Kibaki, suggesting that elder statesmen should guide the country toward stability and unity.
