A new 2025 State of the Media Report by the Media Council of Kenya (MCK) shows a major shift in how Kenyans consume news, with social media now taking the lead.
The report, released during World Press Freedom Day 2026, indicates that 39% of Kenyans relied on social media platforms for news in 2025, making it the most preferred source.

Television followed at 31%, while radio dropped to third place at 21%. Smaller shares of respondents said they got news from family and friends (4%), news websites (3%), and newspapers (1%).
The findings also show a steady decline in radio consumption, which stood at 26% in 2024 before falling to 21% in 2025.
TV viewership also recorded a drop, decreasing from 63% to 57% over the same period.

The report further highlights the growing influence of artificial intelligence in news consumption. About 34% of respondents said they use AI tools occasionally for news, while 27% use them regularly. However, 39% reported not using AI platforms at all.

Among those using AI, nearly half said it improved their news experience, while others reported little to no change. A small portion (12%) said AI negatively affected how they consume news.
Despite the shifts in digital consumption, Citizen TV maintained its position as Kenya’s most-watched TV station, holding a 56% audience share.
