Chaos on Garissa–Mwingi Highway After Bus Attack

Transport along the Garissa–Mwingi highway was briefly disrupted on Tuesday evening after suspected attackers ambushed a passenger bus near Ukasi in Kitui County, with several लोगों feared injured.

Witnesses said the bus, which was travelling from Garissa to Mwingi, was attacked in the Ukasi area, sparking panic and forcing other vehicles on the route to stop.

Footage circulating online shows the bus being stoned while in motion, leaving its windscreen shattered. The driver did not stop, instead speeding away to escape the attack.

Following the incident, many passenger buses halted their journeys as a precaution, with drivers and travellers insisting they would not continue until security is guaranteed amid rising tensions between rival communities.

The attack comes amid reports that two people were recently killed in the area in suspected revenge attacks.

By the time of reporting, tension remained high along the highway, with no official statement issued by authorities.

The incident follows a separate attack on Sunday, April 26, in Tseikuru, Mwingi, where seven residents were killed. Police say armed assailants raided the village, shot the victims, and fled.

According to the National Police Service, the violence is linked to ongoing clashes between local residents and a pastoralist community.

In response to the earlier killings, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja deployed a high-level security team led by Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat to the affected area, with additional reinforcements sent to restore order.
