John DeMathew died in 2019 following a road accident along Thika Super Highway. He was widely celebrated for his music, often described as rich in coded messages that many believed reflected real-life events.
He was married to two wives, Sarafina Wairimû and Caroline Waithera, and had seven children. Beyond his music career, he was known as a devoted family man.
DeMathew began his musical journey early, recording his first song while still in school. He rose to fame in the late 1980s with hits like “My Dear Ndukû,” followed by other popular songs such as “Njata Yakwa” and “Pin Number.”
