Harvard President Claudine Gay Resigns Amid Plagiarism and Campus Antisemitism Allegations

Harvard President Claudine Gay has announced her resignation after just six months in office, citing a need for the institution to navigate a challenging period.

The decision comes amidst a controversy involving plagiarism accusations and allegations of campus antisemitism. The resignation marks the end of the tenure of the first Black president and second woman in Harvard’s history. The controversy involved CEOs, billionaires, donors, and congressional leaders.

The decision to step down was made before new plagiarism allegations emerged, with Gay acknowledging the difficulty of the situation and expressing a hope for her brief presidency to be remembered as a moment of reawakening. The Harvard Corporation defended Gay, accepting her resignation with sorrow and condemning racist attacks against her.

The turmoil included a plagiarism scandal and a congressional hearing where Gay and other university presidents faced criticism for their handling of calls for the genocide of Jewish people on campus. Interim President Alan M. Garber will take over until a new leader is found. Gay plans to return to a faculty position.
