Murkomen Calls for Tough Court Action over Surge in Political Violence

Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has strongly condemned what he termed a growing trend of political violence and the use of hired gangs, urging the Judiciary to take firm action against those responsible.

Murkomen said the government is committed to dealing decisively with individuals involved in organising or carrying out acts of political violence, regardless of their political affiliations.

He called on the courts to handle such cases with urgency and seriousness, saying strong legal action would help deter future incidents.

The CS also appealed to political leaders across the divide to promote peaceful, issue-based politics and avoid inciting violence, especially among young people.

He spoke on Saturday during the Cherangany Unity Cup finals in Sinyerere Ward, Trans-Nzoia County—an event aimed at nurturing youth talent and encouraging positive social values.

Murkomen was accompanied by Deputy Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli and several Members of Parliament.

He noted that security agencies are on high alert and warned that anyone found engaging in unlawful activities will face the full force of the law.

His remarks follow unrest along Nairobi’s Southern Bypass, where suspected gangs reportedly blocked roads and attacked motorists ahead of a political rally in Kikuyu.

The incident has fueled political tensions, with leaders trading accusations over the alleged use of gangs.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has linked the violence to what he described as organised political intimidation, accusing the government of enabling such actions—claims that have not been independently verified.

Murkomen’s statement is part of a wider government response to growing concerns over political intolerance and public safety as political activity intensifies.
