Esther Passaris to Run for Makadara MP Seat in 2027

Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris has officially announced that she will contest the Makadara parliamentary seat in the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during a Monday morning interview on Radio47, Passaris said she had taken time to reflect on her political journey before deciding to shift her focus to Makadara.

She explained that her decision was driven by her desire to contribute more directly to development in the constituency, expressing confidence that she can make a meaningful impact.

Her declaration effectively confirms that she will not seek a third term as Nairobi Woman Representative, an affirmative action position aimed at increasing women’s participation in elective politics. Having served two consecutive terms since 2017, she had earlier indicated that she would step aside in 2027 to allow another woman to take up the role.

On November 22, 2025, Passaris addressed circulating online campaign posters that falsely implied she had endorsed a successor, clarifying that she had not backed any candidate. At the time, she reiterated that once she completes her second term, it would be appropriate for a new woman leader to assume the position.

She further emphasized that she would not be rushed into political alignments and that any decisions regarding endorsements would follow proper procedures within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

Why Makadara?

Passaris said her choice of Makadara followed consultations with party members and an assessment of viable constituencies. She revealed that she had initially weighed options between Westlands and Makadara.

The dynamics changed after Makadara MP George Aladwa signaled plans to vie for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat in 2027, a move that appears to have created an opening in the constituency race.

In November 2025, Passaris also publicly expressed support for President William Ruto’s expected 2027 re-election bid, commending his leadership and development agenda — a position that sparked interest amid shifting political alignments within ODM at the national level.

Despite her endorsement of the President, she maintained that her priority remains fulfilling her current mandate in Nairobi and completing her second term with measurable progress for women and vulnerable groups.

Her latest announcement firmly positions her in the Makadara MP race, adding to the growing number of early political declarations shaping the 2027 contest. The move also reflects anticipated shifts in Nairobi politics, where changes in the gubernatorial race often influence constituency-level battles.
