On Monday, Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale held high-level discussions with Dr. Akbar Waljee, Executive Director of the University of Michigan Center for Global Health Equity (CGHE), to explore collaboration in areas such as cancer care, early disease detection, and the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve clinical outcomes.

A key part of the talks was the proposal to establish the AI-in-Health Centre at KNH, designed to equip Kenyan clinicians with advanced data science and AI-driven clinical skills, positioning the hospital as a regional hub for digital health innovation.

“The proposed centre aims to give Kenyan clinicians advanced AI and data science skills to improve patient care,” the MoH stated.

Duale also proposed the joint development of Centres of Excellence in Cardiovascular Care and Sports Medicine, aimed at strengthening specialized healthcare and promoting Kenya as a regional center for advanced medical services and medical tourism.

The government plans to leverage CGHE’s technical expertise to set up a Policy, Innovation, and Reciprocal Learning Institute, encouraging South–South collaboration, shared learning, and evidence-based health policymaking.

To fast-track implementation, a Joint MoH–KNH–CGHE Working Group will be formed to develop a time-bound roadmap for the initiatives. The framework will build on existing programs, including the USD 6.5 million Uzima-DS initiative, and align with the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) and national UHC priorities.

The meeting included Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards Mary Muthoni, Director-General of Health Patrick Amoth, KNH Board Chair Dr. Abbas Gullet, and other senior government and health officials.
