Wetang’ula: Why Luhyas Will Stand With Ruto in 2027

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has said the Luhya community will rally behind President William Ruto’s bid for a second term in the 2027 General Election, citing a political understanding and what he described as clear indications that Ruto is on course to retain power.

Speaking on Thursday during an interview with local media, Wetang’ula played down claims that Western Kenya politics revolves around rivalry between individual leaders, insisting that the people ultimately make the decision.

He said the region had an agreement with President Ruto dating back to the 2022 election and that the partnership would continue into 2027. According to Wetang’ula, anyone keenly observing national politics would see strong signs pointing to Ruto’s re-election.

The Speaker urged the Luhya community to approach politics strategically, arguing that voters should prioritise outcomes and long-term interests rather than political slogans. He likened the decision to choosing a safe crossing over River Nzoia, warning against political choices that could harm the community’s future.

Looking beyond 2027, Wetang’ula disclosed that talks with President Ruto include an understanding on succession, with the Luhya community expected to receive backing to produce the next president once Ruto completes his two constitutional terms.

He acknowledged his own presidential ambitions but emphasised that unity would come first. Wetang’ula said that when the opportunity arises, he would support whichever Luhya leader emerges as the strongest candidate, even if it is not himself, stressing that personal ambition should not override collective interests.
