Police Gun Down Two Robbery Suspects in Nairobi CBD

Two suspected robbers were fatally shot by plainclothes police officers on Tuesday after allegedly robbing a man of cash along Moi Avenue in the city center.

Police confirmed that a gang of five attacked a bank customer shortly after he withdrew an undisclosed amount of money. Officers on patrol were alerted to the midday incident and swiftly engaged the suspects, resulting in the death of two. The remaining three gang members managed to escape on foot.

Central Police Commander Stephene Nyakombo stated that a hunt for the fleeing suspects is underway. He added that operations have been intensified across the city to curb the activities of gangs linked to similar past incidents, especially in the lead-up to the festive season.

Authorities were forced to deploy teargas to disperse a large crowd of onlookers gathered at the crime scene before the bodies could be moved for autopsy.

Spike in ‘Bank-Run’ Robberies

The incident is the second high-value robbery to occur in the same area recently after victims withdrew funds from banks.

Last month, an official from the Embassava Matatu Sacco reported being robbed of Sh500,000 near the National Archives, moments after leaving a bank on Moi Avenue. The official was attacked by a group of approximately ten men who fled the scene on foot. Another similar robbery involving a large sum of money was reported in the same area earlier in the month, with both cases remaining under investigation.

Police suggest that such “bank-run” robberies often involve collusion among various parties, including individuals within the banks or the victims’ offices. An investigation into these links is ongoing, but no arrests related to collusion have yet been made.
