Tunisia: Four Dead, Forty Hospitalized After Consuming Contaminated Alcohol

Four individuals have lost their lives, and 40 others have been hospitalized in southern Tunisia due to the consumption of contaminated alcohol, as stated by an official.

An investigation has been initiated, and the individual responsible for supplying the tainted alcohol has been apprehended, according to Fethi Baccouche, a spokesperson for the Medenine court, who informed AFP.

An analysis of the alcohol is currently in progress to ascertain the cause of the widespread poisoning. Of the 40 survivors, a majority have been discharged from the hospital, although some have been transferred to the capital, Tunis, for further medical care, Baccouche noted, though specific numbers were not provided.

Instances of poisonings resulting from improperly produced or adulterated alcohol are frequently reported in Tunisia and often lead to fatalities. In 2021, health authorities in Tunisia reported five deaths and the hospitalization of 25 individuals in Kasserine, located in the western part of the country, following the consumption of contaminated alcohol.

Similarly, in May 2020, 39 people, including six fatalities, suffered poisoning after ingesting methanol near the city of Kairouan. The consumption of homemade alcohol is prevalent in certain working-class neighborhoods of Tunis and remote areas with high poverty rates.

This illegal alcohol is often considerably cheaper than commercially available alternatives.
