Raila Odinga to Be Laid to Rest in Private Ceremony, Family Confirms

The family of the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga has announced that his burial on Sunday will be a private affair attended only by a small group of close relatives and invited guests.

Speaking to mourners in Bondo, Siaya County, on Thursday, Raila’s elder brother and Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Oginga — who co-chairs the State Funeral Committee — said the burial will follow a ceremony at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST).

Dr. Oginga clarified earlier reports surrounding Raila’s passing, noting that the family had remained hopeful for his recovery before receiving the devastating news from India.

“We will give Raila a dignified farewell befitting a great son of this land,” he said. “After the ceremony at JOOUST, Raila will be buried privately beside our parents — a service that will only be attended by a few selected people.”

The State Funeral service is scheduled for Friday at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi, where local and international dignitaries are expected to pay their final respects.

After the national ceremony, Raila’s body will be taken to his Karen residence for an overnight vigil. On Saturday morning, it will be flown to Kisumu for public viewing at Jomo Kenyatta Stadium in Mamboleo before being transported by road to Bondo for another overnight stay.

Raila’s sister, Ruth Odinga, and his children, Raila Odinga Jr. and Winnie Odinga viewing his body.

According to Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, who co-chairs the funeral committee, the final burial rites will be conducted in accordance with the traditions of the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK).
