Police Confiscate 32.5 Tonnes of Smuggled Milk Powder Along Eastern Bypass

Law enforcement authorities have intercepted more than 32.5 tonnes of illicit milk powder at a warehouse situated along the Eastern Bypass in Nairobi.

In a sting operation carried out on Thursday, an undercover officer, posing as a potential buyer, was directed by a known broker in Eastleigh to the Kamakis area along the Eastern Bypass.

Upon arrival, a truck carrying an agreed-upon quantity of 150 bags, each weighing 25 kilograms, was delivered. The agreed price was Ksh16,500 per bag, resulting in a total transaction amount of Ksh2,475,000, according to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

The truck was escorted by the owner of the consignment, Joseph Waweru, who was driving a Toyota Prado with registration number KDN 573V. Waweru is believed to be the primary supplier to business entities in Nairobi.

Other undercover detectives, discreetly tailing the operation, apprehended two suspects, Joseph Waweru and Ali Noor. However, the youthful truck driver managed to escape.

Following interrogation, detectives traced the main suspect Joseph Waweru’s warehouse to Twin Industrial Park Godowns in the Ruai area off the Eastern Bypass. In the presence of the suspect, law enforcement officials gained access and discovered an additional 1,150 bags, each weighing 25 kilograms, of various milk powder brands (five in total) and 289 bags of 25-kilogram maize corn starch.

Inside the warehouse, there was also a truck with registration number KDG 087Z containing 17 empty drums suspected to be used for transporting ethanol.

The brands of the confiscated milk powder include 181 bags labeled Fresh Dairy (a product of Brookside Uganda), 421 bags labeled Gardo (a product of New Zealand), 485 bags of Non-Dairy Creamer (a product of China), 56 bags labeled SAMA (a product of New Zealand), and 6 bags labeled Lato (a product of Uganda). Additionally, 289 bags of maize corn starch were of Indian origin.

The apprehended suspects are currently in police custody, and investigations are ongoing.
