The Ministry of Health has yet to release an official statement on the resignation or name his successor. Gitura, a seasoned lawyer and career public servant, had been appointed to the position by President William Ruto in December 2024 for a three-year term.

Gitura’s public service record spans decades. He was Murang’a’s first senator under Jubilee in 2013 and later served as Deputy Speaker of the Senate during the Eleventh Parliament. He unsuccessfully vied for Murang’a governor in 2017.

Outside elective politics, he has held several senior state roles, including chairing the Communications Authority of Kenya and the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA), as well as serving as Kenya’s Ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg, and the EU.

At KUTRRH, he oversaw governance at the 650-bed facility, which is among Kenya’s premier referral hospitals, offering advanced care, research, and medical training. The hospital was established to ease pressure on Kenyatta National Hospital while strengthening specialized health services and research capacity.
